The album "Spheres" (1993) was released at a time when the metal scene was too hermetic to appreciate its uniqueness and recognize the influence it would have on future generations. Initially underestimated, the bold combination of jazz fusion and progressive/technical death metal was considered groundbreaking many years later and inspired artists such as Gorguts , Necrophaigst and Obscura .

The album was recorded at Arnold Mühren Studios in the North of the Netherlands and originally released on CD in May 1993 by Roadrunner Records . The lineup consisted of Patrick Mameli on vocals and guitar, Jeroen Paul Thesseling (replacing Tony Choy ; would later join Obscura ) on bass, Patrick Uterwijk ( Pestilence : 1989–2013) on guitars, and Marco Fodis ( Pestilence : 1986–1994) on drums. The first version of the cover by Dan Seagrave ( Morbid Angel , Entombed , Suffocation ) was rejected by the band and replaced with a new one featuring a different interpretation of a spherical object. Mameli wanted the object to resemble the sphere seen on the cover of Testimony of the Ancients (1991).

The release of "Spheres" divided listeners, with only a handful acknowledging the groundbreaking nature of the album. This led to tensions within the band, and then a hiatus. PESTILENCE disappeared from the scene until the release of "Resurrection Macabre" in 2009 (apart from a "best off" album on Roadrunner Records and several other reissues, many of which saw the light of day without the band's knowledge or consent).

Patrick Mameli : "Spheres was and still is an important release because it introduced the guitar synthesizer as a real instrument in our musical toolbox. It helped us give this album a new palette. Only Cynic had done something similar, but Pestilence went even further and created a new musical dimension. The different approach to songwriting and lyrics made Pestilence take a big risk at the time. Now, for some fans, it's their favorite album. It's funny how things evolve over time."
