Dutch death metal legends PESTILENCE have re-recorded twelve of the most iconic songs from their 38-year career for their upcoming album "Levels of Perception" .
Patrick Mameli – whose distinctive vocals, guitar and songwriting are PESTILENCE’s trademarks – sees Levels of Perception as a testament to the band’s contribution to the progression of death metal music. “I always wanted to make a best-of album because it would mean I had achieved something in the past; something that still has value,” comments Mameli . “To be able to choose songs that I composed in the distant past and bring them into the present, with Michiel van der Plicht (drums), Rutger van Noordenburg (guitar) and Joost van der Graaf (bass) – I think that’s a great value and an incredible experience.”
Re-recording the songs has breathed new life into them, partly due to the refreshed line-up, but also to the subtle changes that reflect the experience and reflections that Mameli has gained over the years . It sets Levels of Perception apart from the cheap, unimaginative compilations and unifies the sound of the record – as befits a full-length album. “The title of the release is Levels of Perception. Why? Because that’s what happened to these songs,” Mameli explains . “The participation of different musicians than those who originally took part in the recordings; musicians with their own views, different abilities and their own interpretation. It puts them in a new light. We’re coming back with new levels of perception.”
The drums for Levels of Perception were recorded by Michiel van der Plicht in 2021 during a live broadcast from T Paard (The Hague, Netherlands). "These tracks sounded so amazing that we just had to use them," Mameli comments . Guitar, bass and vocals were recorded at van der Plicht's own studio , On Duty (Mijdrecht, Netherlands). Reaper was behind the console . Van der Plicht was responsible for mixing and mastering . "After recording Exitivm I started to realise that when you can design, mix and master yourself, there is much more control over your product, thanks to the honesty and passion for your own compositions. It's much better than hiring a sound engineer who has no feel for your music," the PESTILENCE frontman sums up . The cover of "Levels of Perception" was created by Peter Suchy .
