"Consuming Impulse" (1989) turned out to be a breakthrough album in the history of PESTILENCE . It inaugurated the transformation of the band, which sent from intense and raw sounding thrash into the embrace of heavier, more memorable death metal. Martin van Drunen's ( Apshyx ) vocals also underwent a significant metamorphosis. The album was inducted into the American magazine Decibel's "hall of fame" in 2013. The album gave PESTILENCE international recognition, positioning the band at the forefront of the scene at that time, together with Death , Obituary , Sepultura , Morbid Angel , Bolt Thrower and Autopsy .

The album was recorded at Music Lab Studios in Berlin, Germany and originally released in October 1989 with van Drunen on vocals (his second and last album with PESTILENCE ). Patrick Uterwijk played guitars (he replaced Randy Meinhard shortly after the release of Malleus Maleficarum ), Marco Foddis on drums, and Patrick Mameli on bass and guitars. The original release included a CD, released on the now defunct RC Records (a sublabel of the company now known as Roadrunner Records ).

"Consuming Impulse" is associated with the rise of technical death metal; a subgenre that PESTILENCE co-created and developed alongside Death , Atheist and Cynic . Widely considered a cult classic.

Patrick Mameli : "This album seems to be the European answer to "Leprocy" Death, showing the first signs of Pestilence's typical riffing style and sick melodic lines. After a short lesson from me, v. Drunen was able to change his voice known from "Malleus Maleficarum" to his characteristic vocals he uses now. You'll thank me later, Martin."
